Crowns
Dental crowns are protective covers that are fitted over an existing tooth which has been damaged or heavily broken down. The crown disguises the damaged tooth but more importantly protects it and makes it viable again as a functioning tooth.
Crowns are made from metal or porcelain and newer stronger ceramic materials such as zirconium. Older porcelain crowns were typically strengthened by using metal bases to support strong biting forces. However this often leads to the appearance of dark metallic lines around the gum line. With these newer stronger ceramic materials the porcelain bonded crowns which have the metal base, are quickly going out of fashion.
